It explodes out of the seats and covers the rink like a blanket, shaking the split ends in your blond mullet. But cram 5,000 fans into a 5,000-seat arena, with a roof that’s about 75 feet above the ice surface and walls just 15 feet or so behind the last row of seats, and the noise has nowhere to escape. Spread 10,000 fans out in a massive, sterile 18,300-seat arena, and the noise just dissipates like morning fog. And therefore, a heck of a lot louder, and a heck of a lot more fun.
It was all the things you usually see at a Coyotes game. And beyond the fake mullets, there was some alarmingly realistic coyote-skin headgear that may or may not have been homemade.
